The Powerlines photographs form part of an ongoing series of works exploring new contexts for the visualisation of the South Wales Valleys. There has been (and is) a slippage between personal experiences of living in post-industrial societies and the way those societies have been represented in photography. The colourful and typographical nature of this new work inflects on long-established modes of representation and celebrates the less visible, alternative histories of the Valleys region.


The work is, in part, produced to reveal the structures underpinning the media surfaces that have become the prevailing windows on those cultures defined by their dominant industrial past.
